A summer of volunteering
Seventeen-year-old Yana Novak talks about being a volunteer

Over the summer, I got the chance to take part in a volunteer programme. Ever since I was a small child, I've always loved animals, but we weren't allowed to have pets when I was growing up. When I found out that I could work at a wildlife centre in Vancouver, Canada which rescues wild animals, I seized the opportunity. Vancouver is surrounded by nature. It has mountains on one side and the ocean on the other. It was definitely the best possible place for me!

The centre itself looks after sick and injured wild animals. I didn't realise this, but it is actually illegal for members of the public to care for them. The centre aims to help creatures like rabbits, deer and so on to get better so they can return to the wild. While I was staying there, one of the team brought in a baby bat whose mom had died. I've learned that they're called pups! I learned to feed it with a bottle, being careful of its wings and making sure it didn't bite me. As it grew, we taught it to catch insects and spiders. Once it was ready, we took it out of the city and back into the forest.

I spent every morning at the centre, preparing food, cleaning out cages, doing the washing up and generally helping out. By the end of each session, I was tired but happy. I got the bus back to my host family, had lunch with them and fell asleep for an hour or so. We generally had the afternoons off. When we weren't hiking in the mountains or sailing around the port and islands, we were exploring the city. A couple of times, I asked if I could help overnight and that was so cool! Some of the animals such as the mice, bats and owls don't sleep at night.

For other animal lovers out there, the application process is very easy, but the minimum age for this programme is seventeen and you need a B1 Intermediate level of English. I used an online agency which helped me with the visa, flights, travel insurance and all the other details. You need to write a letter where you explain why you're the perfect candidate! I've wanted to work somewhere like this ever since I was young, so that part was easy for me. I've also taken up wildlife photography, so I included that in too.

Task 4 (8 points)
Unscramble the words 48–54 in the text. Don't forget to transfer your answers to the answer sheet.

In 1992, a ship travelling from China to the US was hit by a (48) MTRSO in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Its cargo of containers was washed overboard and at least one of them split (49) PNOE. The container held around 29,000 yellow plastic ducks as well as plastic frogs and turtles. The toys floated out into the water and have been travelling across the oceans ever since.

It isn't unusual for things from ships to get lost in the sea. Every year, as many as 10,000 containers fall into the ocean, spilling out everything from (50) SSPRTO shoes to plastic bricks. These objects have already done harm to both our seas and our wildlife, and if the accidents don't stop, the situation will get worse. However, in the case of the floating ducks, something (51) STPVIIEO has happened.

Scientists know that the direction in which water moves in our seas and oceans affects our (52) LMTCIAE. Dr Ebbesmeyer, a scientist in the US, realised that observing the ducks as they float around the world can help us (53) DNRSNDTUEA how ocean currents work. In order to collect information, he began to track the ducks' progress.

It seems that after travelling together for some time, the ducks went in different directions. Many of them floated south to the shores of Indonesia, Australia and South America. Meanwhile, the rest headed north into the Arctic Ocean, becoming trapped in (54) CIE until the winds and the movement of the (55) TEWRA sent them over 3,000 kms to the North Pole.
